Mission: The Cure: Operation Kakori
Location: Breyet Nor - Launching Bay 4 - The Badlands
Timeline: MD004 1800 hrs

The shuttle rested uneasily within the mostly darkened bay, seemingly restless and uneasy, waiting to make a getaway from the Obsidian Order’s secret station on Breyet Nor.

Makeba and Gage were the first to arrive at the pad. She believed that the rest of the team was still busy. However, she knew a security alert when she heard it. "Frak, the airlock is locked down from this security alert. Can you get it open?"

"I feel like people think I am only a lockpick," he said with a grin as he approached the airlock. He quickly pulled out one of his favorite tools. It was a small, square, chunky padd that he'd acquired on Cardassia. It had a number of access ports and was also capable of establishing direct contact with other consoles. If he could get past the security blocks.

"I'm working on it. Should be a few minutes," he said.

Keebs stood there silent for a moment. She was antsy to say the very least. They were sitting ducks while Gage did his work. She did the only thing she could do. Makeba drew her phaser and stood with her back to Gage. "I will lay cover fire if it comes to it. I hope they got what we came for."

Gage, despite his protestations, actually enjoyed cracking locks and security access points. He began the slow, careful process of getting into the security system without being detected. Minutes passed, and Gage was completely focused on the lock. He knew he was getting close, and sweat was beginning to form on his brow. He thought he heard some noise in the distance.

"Done. System is opening now," Gage said and stood. He felt slightly lightheaded.

Makeba tapped her comm badge which opened the private channel to all of the Pioneer personnel. All she said was "Now Boarding". As she jogged through the still opening door she looked over her shoulder at Gage. "I am going to get the engines heated up, so we can dust off in a hurry. Get everyone aboard." With that she jumped into the cockpit of the shuttle and began the preflight.

Edmund drifted on the edge of something, feeling as though he were floating.

Was he breathing?

Was this some sort of hallucination?

Each breath came ragged. Beneath his back he felt something hard—unyielding muscle. Something pressed into his ribs. Arms... or were they hands? They held him firmly, refusing to let him slip away.

He managed to crack open one eye.

Above him hovered a bruised Klingon face.

Then darkness claimed him once more.

Moving close behind the Klingon who was carrying Merrick, Audie noticed more than once the Major's eyes trying to open, although there didn't seem to be any conscious thought there. But at least it was a sign of life, and she mentally willed them all to hurry so she could get to a place where she could more thoroughly check over her patients and start treatment they needed.

Couldn't be much further, could it? Quaid was drifting in and out, too, carried between Audie and another Marine. The going was slow, but it was the best they could do, and she'd be happy when they were safely back on their own territory.

As Mercy carried Quaid's legs, she wondered why they hadn't just left the disgraced, probably treasonous, bastard, to die on this Station? With her arms engaged in this way, she couldn't defend the Away Team.

Lachlan came through the airlock with the others in a tight, ugly knot of bodies and weapons, one shoulder under Quaid’s weight and his sidearm held low in his free hand.

Behind him, Korrath carried Merrick as if the Major weighed nothing. Just behind them, two of the team bore Walken between them, his body secured but unmistakably still. The Klingon’s face made it clear he considered the whole situation an insult to proper battle, but Lachlan had no time to care. Merrick was breathing. Quaid was breathing. Walken… was coming home.

Then he saw the rest of the team.

What was left of them.

His eyes found Shy first, then Moreau, then dropped briefly to where Walken was being carried. The confirmation landed hard, but Lachlan’s jaw only tightened once, and whatever was in his face was gone by the time the station alert began screaming through the bay.

Not now.

“Aye, there it is,” he muttered, glancing toward the upper gantries. “Knew we were missin’ something.”

His eyes found Makeba in the cockpit, then Gage near the hatch.

“Wounded aboard first. Merrick, Quaid, Marley, anyone who needs medical. Walken too—get him secured.”

He looked toward Mercy, catching the tension in her posture with her hands full.

“Nearly there, Mercy. Get him aboard, then your rifle’s yours again.”

His gaze snapped to Korrath.

“Big man, inside. Set the Major down where the medic can reach him, gently if you can manage the concept.”

Then Lachlan shifted his grip on Quaid and started moving for the shuttle ramp.

“Everyone else, cover arcs until we’re loaded. Don’t crowd the hatch. Don’t stop moving. We are guests here, and I think the hosts just noticed we’ve been stealing the silver.”

Jayna let the Marines go first with Walken's body. She paused just long enough to set a bot to destroy the data on the computer, then she pulled her crystals and followed Emiko and the others. If they moved quickly enough, they could get to the shuttle before anyone else came looking for them. But she had no doubt word was already spreading. They had to move fast and they had to move as quietly as possible.

She planned to make it a little more difficult for those who came after them by closing and securing access to the shuttle bay from the station. It wouldn't hold anyone for long, but if it gave them a couple more minutes, it would be enough. Hopefully.

"Here..." Shuffling a little under the shared weight of the Lt. Commander, Audie moved toward the back of the shuttle where the wounded could be put down out of the way of foot traffic, and where she'd have some room to move between them to render aid until they could get to a proper sickbay.

Carefully, she helped lower Quaid to the deck, then nodded to the Klingon. "You can put him there," she nodded to a spot on her other side. "Thank you for your help." She wasn't sure where the man had come from, but without his help, it would have been a much harder task to get Merrick to safety.

Korrath looked at Audie for a moment, then gave a low grunt that might have been thanks, acknowledgement, or simple permission for her to continue existing in his general vicinity.

He lowered Merrick where she had indicated, careful despite the blood, bruises, and battle still burning behind his eyes. Once the Major was down, Korrath straightened and looked toward the hatch, shoulders squaring again.

Lachlan caught the movement from where he was helping settle Quaid.

“Stay inside, big man,” he said. “Plenty of folk still need the floor.”

Korrath’s eyes narrowed.

Then he grunted again and stepped back, just far enough to be out of Audie’s way, but not so far that anyone could mistake him for relaxed.

Emiko felt very lost in the shuffle by everything that was occurring. She really could do nothing at this point. The best thing she could do was watch Jayna and try to learn something. She nestled herself in a good area to observe and stayed as quiet as a mouse.

Once everyone passed into the shuttle bay, Jayna set the door circuits to fry as soon as they were clear. Then, with Emiko by her side, headed for the shuttle. It would hopefully give them a little time before the station security got into the bay.

Glancing up at Korrath, Audie gave him a quick nod -- she was certain that no one was going to accidentally step on her or her patients with the big Klingon there, so she could focus on her task. Quickly scanning the vitals of the men in her care, she took a breath, relieved that they were stable, for now, and she started rendering what aid she could.

Shy ran into the bay, pulling drag as the others crowded toward the shuttle. He cycled the bay closed as he saw other figures running at it from station-side. "I'm going to seal this hatch and then we need to mimic the other bays to show launch sequences to confuse their initial targeting," he said over the team net now that they were in close proximity. Once he had the hatch sealed, he broke the computer plate and began spraying bind-weld along the bottom seams of hatch.

Jayna sent Emiko ahead, then paused to fry the locking mechanism to slow down the station's security.

"Get onto the shuttle. That won't slow them down enough to make it worth the time," Jayde hissed. "Besides, you should let the Marines do it."

Jayna wanted to argue, but this was neither the time nor the place, so she shrugged and hurried onto the shuttle to clear the way for the remaining Marines.

"Right. If we are going to make it out of here, I am going to need someone up here to fire these weapons." Makeba tapped the console and a quick burst of phaser fire made sure no one would be getting through the hatch anytime soon. The shuttle turned on the pad and made for the rapidly closing bay door.

Gage had taken up a spot at one of the auxiliary stations, and when he saw the door closing, he acted. He had considered this possibility and thanks to Makeba's familiarity with the systems, they had been able to formulate plans for different scenarios just like this.

His fingers moved rapidly as he brought up the diagnostics control panel for the shuttlebay doors. Their security was almost laughable. It hadn't been updated in who-knew how many years. Gage thought that just about anyone could have hacked it. Inside the control command root structure, he used a macro to force the doors to stop. An alarm popped up on his screen.

"Good news, the shuttlebay doors won't close any further. Bad news, they won't open either. The circuits are fried," Gage yelled. "You're gonna need to rate ninety degrees, now!"

After helping seal the bay doors, Andrew had gotten himself on the shuttle and slid into a jump seat, bringing up the panel next to him with tactical information. He pulled on a set of amber-tinted glasses that let him jump into the weapons system virtually and said, "I've got the tac system." He pulled out a controller and made sure the link was fully established, and began setting up automatic firing routines for the weapons system to take out soft targets if and when the shuttle broke free. Then he'd shift it over to point defense mode and hope someone came up with a good idea to get them back aboard the Valiant.

"Thanks for the doorstop, Lieutenant. Everyone, hold on to your butts." Keebs shouted to everyone and banked the shuttle hard to a 90-degree rate. The shuttle nosed up as the thrusters along the dorsal surface of the craft fired simultaneously. The shuttle pushed through the opening as phaser fire lanced out from the station. Makeba actually smiled; she seemed to be having fun for perhaps the first time since boarding the Pioneer. With a few taps of the console, she rolled the shuttle. This allowed the phaser fire to move past the shuttle just outside the window. "The Valiant is just ahead, but it is not going to be an easy flight. Hang on. Transmitting to the Valiant now and instituting evasive pattern delta nine."

Gage was a little surprised to see Makeba smile. She was usually so intense. Then again, it was a handy bit of flying and they had both done well with their part of the mission. "I'm hanging on," he said. "In case we get more barrel rolls."

When the call came to 'hang on', Audie braced herself as best she could so that she could keep her patients from getting tossed around too much, praying that they could just get out of here and back to Federation 'territory'!

As the shuttle exited and went into evasive maneuvers, Andrew's vision filled with the weapons batteries camera display and the system phasers went into automatic mode while he ripple fired the small micro-torpedo launcher, aiming at the stations weapons platforms and tractor emitters. He winced and ducked a couple times as very close misses began registering and he felt a sweat break out. This was going to be messy.
Aboard The USS Valiant

When the sensors picked up the shuttle departing the station, Valiant already knew something was going on by monitoring the stations weapons systems.

"Here they come," Rhu said, mostly to himself as the camera feed picked up the shuttle. "General Quarters, Battle Stations. Tactical stand by, do not fire unless I give the order. Helm, stand by." Not having some of the newer department heads under stress conditions before, Rhu and Harriet were monitoring those stations.

Just in case.

"Ok, Intel station. Send that burst communication packet to the shuttle with what we intend, lets hope their transceiver picks it up and we get the flash response. I don't want to fiddle around with too much stray traffic for the station to pick up."

Amy was glued to the console and also looking out towards where the shuttle that carried the teams from the Pioneer. Hearing Rhu's command Amy sent out the communication, and in the back of her mind she thought about Shy... he, they needed to get back.

The bridge lighting dropped to red, and Nyx was already pulling the shuttle’s track across her helm display before the alert had finished sounding.

It came out of Breyet Nor hard, rolling beneath the station’s fire before breaking into an evasive pattern through the disturbed space beyond. Whoever was flying knew how to make a shuttle difficult to kill.

“Got them,” Nyx said, leaning closer to the console. “They’re clear of the bay. Running delta nine and coming straight for us.”

Her fingers moved quickly, folding the shuttle’s course together with the station’s firing arcs and the shifting currents of the Badlands.

“I’ve got an intercept ready.” A tiny grin touched one corner of her mouth. “Say when, Captain.”

Rhu opened his mouth to give the word, when he saw his tactical repeater flash as weapons were starting to spool up.

This was not the time for personal initiative and anticipating his orders.

"Tactical. Belay and safety those weapons," he barked. "Lieutenant Kolan. You're relieved. Hasty, get her off my bridge and confine to quarters."

He touched a button on his command chair and said, "Lieutenant Ruffalo to the bridge."

There was activity behind Rhu as his COB escorted the protesting former chief of Security out.

Taking a breath to refocus, he checked the situation, then said. "Alright Nyx. When."
